The Model Y was the fifth best-selling new car in the UK in 2024 with 32,862 registrations, the only electric car in the top ten. 2024 was the last full year of the original design; the redesigned Model Y reached UK customers in 2025. A privately used 2024 car does not need its first MOT until 2027 — but some already have one, and on a Model Y that usually tells you how the car has been used.

Where this information comes from

Registration figures are SMMT new car data. Recall references are DVSA vehicle safety recall numbers (in the form R/year/number), with build dates cross-checked against manufacturer and European recall notices where they were published. MOT figures for earlier registrations are derived from the DVSA anonymised MOT tests and results dataset, published under the Open Government Licence v3.0.

Recall records change. Before you buy, check the specific car by registration on the GOV.UK vehicle recall checker.

Why a 2024 car has no MOT pass rate yet

A UK car does not need its first MOT until it is three years old, so a 2024 registration reaches its first test during 2027. Until enough of them have been tested there is no reliable pass rate for this registration year — and we do not publish an estimate as if it were one.

A 2024 Model Y that already has an MOT was tested early, and on this car that usually means private hire. The 2023 cars, many of which were tested early at high mileage, show what a hard-working Model Y looks like at its first tests.

This page is built on what can be checked today: recall records, warranty terms, faults reported on the same generation, and the MOT record of earlier registrations of the same car.

What to expect at the first MOT

To an MOT tester, a 2024 Model Y is the same car as a 2023 one: the same weight, suspension and tyres, and no exhaust. The 2023 cars are therefore the best guide — and their failures are almost all rubber.

What is most likely to come up first

  • Tyres. Three of the five most common Model Y failures are tyre items: tread depth, damage and visible cords. Check all four, including the inner edges.
  • Suspension bushes and joints. The fourth most common failure. Uneven wear on the inner edge of a tyre is the early warning.
  • Headlamp aim. A recurring item on the 2023 cars, and quick to correct before the test.
  • Brake discs. Regenerative braking does most of the slowing, so discs tend to corrode before they wear. Pads rarely fail.
Already has an MOT? Ask why
A 2024 car only has an MOT history if it was tested early — usually because it is, or was, a taxi, private hire or fleet vehicle. That is not a reason to walk away, but it is a reason to look harder at the mileage, the interior wear and the warranty position.

Recalls to check on a 2024 Model Y

Both UK recalls listed against the 2024 Model Y are software or electronics issues, and Tesla fixes most recalls over the air — which is exactly why it is worth confirming the car has actually received them.

Tyre pressure warning software
R/2025/002
Dated 31 December 2024: the tyre pressure warning light may not stay on between drive cycles, so a driver may not be alerted to an under-inflated tyre. Fixed by a software update.
Rear-view camera
R/2025/049
Dated 28 March 2025: on a small percentage of cars, a short on the car computer board at power-up can cause loss of the rear-view camera image. Confirm with Tesla that the remedy has been completed.
2023-build steering campaign
Builds to 11 Oct 2023
Model Ys built between roughly 24 February and 11 October 2023 on older software were covered by a power steering assist campaign. A 2024 registration is unlikely to fall inside it, but an early-2024 car sold from stock could — check the build date.
A recall applies to a build range, not a registration year, and recall work is free whatever the car’s age. Confirm the exact car on the GOV.UK recall checker.

Private hire, mileage and the last of the original Model Y

Two things matter more on a 2024 Model Y than on almost any other car on this site: how hard it has worked, and the fact that it is the final year of a design that has since been replaced.

Usage · ex-private hire
A popular private hire car
  • The Model Y is widely used for private hire, and those cars cover big mileages fast — the 2023 cars tested early had already averaged over 32,000 miles.
  • A 2024 car with an MOT history already was tested early, which usually means it has been licensed for hire. Ask directly.
  • High mileage can take a car past the 50,000-mile basic warranty long before its fourth birthday.
  • Look at the rear seats, door cards and driver’s seat bolster — the giveaways of a working car.
Last of the original · 2024
Proven, and cheaper than the redesign
  • The redesign brought new lighting, a quieter cabin and a rear passenger screen. A 2024 car is the original design, and used prices reflect that.
  • The original design was on UK roads from 2022, so its faults are well understood.
  • Major battery failures are rare and degradation is generally modest. The battery and drive unit have their own eight-year warranty.
  • Software keeps improving after purchase — but check the car is on current firmware before you buy.
Three questions before you view it
“Has it ever been used for private hire?”, “What is the current software version?” and “When were the tyres last replaced?” On a 2024 Model Y those answers tell you more than any test certificate.

How much warranty is left on a 2024 Model Y

Tesla splits its warranty in two. The basic cover is relatively short and mileage-limited; the battery and drive unit cover is long. On a high-mileage 2024 car the first may already have run out.

Cover Term What it means for a 2024 car
Basic vehicle warranty 4 years / 80,000 km (about 50,000 miles) Ends during 2028 at the latest, and much sooner on a high-mileage or ex-private-hire car.
Battery and drive unit · RWD 8 years / 160,000 km (about 100,000 miles) Includes a guarantee of at least 70% battery capacity over the period.
Battery and drive unit · Long Range and Performance 8 years / 192,000 km (about 120,000 miles) The same 70% capacity guarantee, over a longer distance.
Recall work Free, with no time limit Most Tesla recalls are carried out over the air.

Known faults to look for

These are the issues reported on this generation of the Model Y. Costs are indicative UK independent-specialist ranges, not quotes — and on a car this young, many will still be a warranty matter.

Suspension control arm and link bushes
£300–£700
Owners report bush and ball joint wear earlier than expected, often from around 30,000 miles. Knocks over bumps and uneven inner-edge tyre wear are the signs.
Tyres
£600–£1,200 a set
Close to two tonnes with instant torque. Tyre items dominate the Model Y’s MOT failures, so treat them as a running cost.
Low-voltage battery failure
£150–£350
Can fail with little warning. The symptoms are scattered electrical alerts rather than an obvious battery warning.
Rattles and firm ride
£0–£300
Cabin rattles and a firm, sometimes harsh ride on broken roads are among the most common owner complaints. Drive it on a poor surface.
Paint, panel gaps and boot seals
£0–£800
Walk every panel gap in daylight and check the boot well for damp.
Door handle mechanism
£150–£400
The flush handles can stick or fail to present. Try all four.

Pre-purchase checklist

Work through this in order. The first few cost nothing and rule out most bad cars.

  1. Ask whether it has been used for private hire, and treat an existing MOT history as the prompt to ask.
  2. Check the mileage against the 50,000-mile basic warranty.
  3. Run the registration through the DVSA recall checker and confirm R/2025/002 and R/2025/049 have been completed.
  4. Get the build date and the software version.
  5. Inspect the inner edge of all four tyres, and price a set into your offer.
  6. Drive it over a broken road and listen for knocks and rattles.
  7. Ask for a battery health report, and check the boot well for damp.
  8. Verify finance and write-off status. Young, expensive cars are far more likely to carry outstanding finance.

Tesla Model Y (2024) FAQs

Is the 2024 Tesla Model Y reliable?

There is no MOT pass rate for private 2024 cars yet, as their first MOT falls in 2027. The closest evidence is strong: 2023 Model Ys pass at 93.8% (Long Range AWD) and 91.3% (rear-wheel drive), against a UK average of 78.3%. Owner complaints centre on suspension bushes, tyres, rattles and the low-voltage battery rather than the drivetrain.

What recalls affect the 2024 Tesla Model Y?

Two UK recalls are listed against the 2024 Model Y: R/2025/002, a software update so the tyre pressure warning stays on between drive cycles, and R/2025/049, for loss of the rear-view camera caused by a short on the car computer board at power-up. Check the specific car by registration on the GOV.UK recall checker.

Why does a 2024 Model Y already have an MOT?

A private car does not need one until it is three years old, so an early MOT usually means the car has been licensed for private hire or run by a fleet that tests early. That is not a reason to reject it, but it is a reason to check the mileage, the interior wear and the warranty position.

How long is the warranty on a 2024 Model Y?

The basic vehicle warranty runs for 4 years or 80,000 km (about 50,000 miles), whichever comes first. The battery and drive unit are covered for 8 years and 160,000 km (about 100,000 miles) on rear-wheel-drive cars, or 192,000 km (about 120,000 miles) on Long Range and Performance, with at least 70% capacity retained.

Should I buy a 2024 Model Y or the 2025 redesign?

The 2025 redesign brought new lighting, a quieter cabin and a rear passenger screen. A 2024 car is the original design, with well-understood faults and lower used prices. The deciding factors are usually price, mileage and how the car has been used.
