The Sportage finished 2024 with 47,163 registrations, just 1,177 behind the Ford Puma. A 2024 car is the original NQ5 that launched in 2022 — the facelifted Sportage did not reach UK customers until mid-2025 — and it will not need an MOT until 2027. What makes it a strong used buy is not a test result but a contract: Kia’s seven-year warranty transfers to the next owner, so a 2024 Sportage can carry factory cover until 2031.

Where this information comes from

Registration figures are SMMT new car data. Recall references are DVSA vehicle safety recall numbers (in the form R/year/number), with build dates cross-checked against manufacturer and European recall notices where they were published. MOT figures for earlier registrations are derived from the DVSA anonymised MOT tests and results dataset, published under the Open Government Licence v3.0.

Recall records change. Before you buy, check the specific car by registration on the GOV.UK vehicle recall checker.

Why a 2024 car has no MOT pass rate yet

A UK car does not need its first MOT until it is three years old, so a 2024 registration reaches its first test during 2027. Until enough of them have been tested there is no reliable pass rate for this registration year — and we do not publish an estimate as if it were one.

No 2024 Sportage pass rate exists yet. The 2022 cars are the first of the same NQ5 generation to reach an MOT, and they are the nearest guide.

This page is built on what can be checked today: recall records, warranty terms, faults reported on the same generation, and the MOT record of earlier registrations of the same car.

What to expect at the first MOT

Mechanically a 2024 Sportage is the same NQ5 that went on sale in 2022, so the 2022 cars are the right comparison. They pass well, and what fails a Sportage is ordinary wear rather than design faults.

What is most likely to come up first

  • Tyres. Most trims run 18 or 19-inch wheels, and tyre tread is the most common Sportage MOT failure. Budget for a set around the first test.
  • Brake pads. The second most common failure item on the model. Hybrids and plug-ins use regenerative braking and usually wear pads more slowly.
  • Suspension components. Not typical at three years, but worn components are the third most common Sportage failure.
  • Lights and wipers. Cheap to fix, but every failed lamp or smearing blade is an outright fail.
Already has an MOT? Ask why
A 2024 car only has an MOT history if it was tested early — usually because it is, or was, a taxi, private hire or fleet vehicle. That is not a reason to walk away, but it is a reason to look harder at the mileage, the interior wear and the warranty position.

Recalls to check on a 2024 Sportage

At the time of writing we found no DVSA recall whose build window covers a Sportage built in 2024. That is good news, but it is not a clean bill of health for every 2024 registration — a car first registered in 2024 can have been built in 2023.

Vacuum pump drive gear
R/2024/500
Covers Sportages built 8 September 2022 to 14 June 2023. The vacuum pump drive gear can be damaged at engine start, which can affect brake assistance. The fix is an engine ECU software update. Only relevant to a 2024 registration that was built early, but quick to rule out.
Instrument cluster software
R/2023/211
Listed against 2023 Sportages: the instrument cluster can fail to boot because of software and electrical noise at start-up. Again, relevant only to a 2024 registration built in 2023.
US recalls you may find online
Not UK recalls
Several 2024 Sportage recalls online, including power steering circuit board and tow hitch module campaigns, are US actions on cars built in Georgia. UK cars are built in Slovakia, so check the DVSA register rather than US lists.
A recall applies to a build range, not a registration year, and recall work is free whatever the car’s age. Confirm the exact car on the GOV.UK recall checker.

Petrol, hybrid or plug-in: choose the powertrain first

The 2024 Sportage was sold with three quite different drivetrains, and they have different weak points. Establish which one you are looking at before you look at anything else.

1.6 T-GDi petrol · automatic
Feel the dual-clutch from cold
  • Automatic petrol cars use a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Owners report jerky shifts at low speed, most noticeable in stop-start traffic.
  • The manual sidesteps the question entirely.
  • Direct injection means carbon build-up on the intake valves over time — a higher-mileage issue rather than a three-year one.
  • Some owners report oil seeping from the turbo oil feed line. Look around the turbo and underneath.
HEV and PHEV · 6-speed automatic
A conventional automatic, with a 12V caveat
  • Hybrid and plug-in cars use a 6-speed torque-converter automatic rather than the dual-clutch, and are smoother at low speed.
  • Hybrid Sportages have the best MOT record of the range, at 87.1% across all years.
  • The known weak point is the 12V battery: owners report drain when the car stands for long periods, sometimes with hybrid system warnings.
  • On a plug-in, ask how it was charged. An ex-company PHEV that was rarely plugged in has done its miles on petrol.
Ask for the badge, then the service record
“Is it the petrol, the hybrid or the plug-in?” decides which faults to look for. “Can I see the service record?” decides whether the seven-year warranty is still intact.

How much warranty is left on a 2024 Sportage

Kia’s seven-year warranty runs from first registration and, unusually, transfers to subsequent owners. On a 2024 car that leaves several years of factory cover — provided the servicing has been done on schedule.

Cover Term What it means for a 2024 car
Kia manufacturer warranty 7 years / 100,000 miles Runs to 2031 on a 2024 car. Mileage is unlimited for the first three years.
Transfer to the next owner Yes Unusual, and worth real money. Confirm the end date by VIN with a Kia dealer.
Condition of cover Servicing on schedule Missed or late services can affect cover. Ask for the full record before you rely on it.
Wear items Not covered Tyres, pads, discs and wiper blades are yours to pay for — and they are what fails the MOT.

Known faults to look for

These are the issues reported on this generation of the Sportage. Costs are indicative UK independent-specialist ranges, not quotes — and on a car this young, many will still be a warranty matter.

12V battery drain (HEV and PHEV)
£0 if in warranty
Owners report a flat 12V battery after the car has stood for a while, sometimes with hybrid system or power supply warnings. Normally diagnosed and fixed under warranty.
7-speed DCT low-speed judder (petrol automatic)
£0 if in warranty
Jerky or hesitant shifts at low speed in traffic. Software updates and clutch adaptation help. Test from cold.
Turbo oil feed line seep (1.6 T-GDi)
£150–£400
Oil seeping from the turbocharger oil feed line and its banjo bolt has been reported. Look around the turbo and under the car.
Carbon build-up on intake valves
£350–£600
A direct-injection trait that shows as rough idle or misfire at higher mileage. Not a three-year problem, but worth knowing about.
Infotainment and connectivity glitches
£0–£300
Screen freezes and phone-mirroring dropouts, usually cured by a software update.
Tyres and brakes
£170–£400
Not faults, but the most common Sportage MOT failure items, and not covered by the warranty.

Pre-purchase checklist

Work through this in order. The first few cost nothing and rule out most bad cars.

  1. Confirm the warranty end date by VIN with a Kia dealer. On a 2024 car it should run to 2031.
  2. Get the full service record. The warranty depends on it.
  3. Establish the powertrain — petrol manual, petrol automatic, hybrid or plug-in — before anything else.
  4. Check the build date, not just the plate. A 2024 registration built in 2023 can fall inside recall R/2024/500.
  5. Run the registration through the DVSA recall checker, and ignore US recall lists, which cover differently built cars.
  6. On a hybrid, ask about 12V battery or hybrid system warnings and any warranty work already done.
  7. On a petrol automatic, test drive from cold in stop-start traffic.
  8. Verify finance and write-off status. Young SUVs are often still on finance.

Kia Sportage (2024) FAQs

Is the 2024 Kia Sportage reliable?

There is no MOT pass rate for 2024 cars yet, as their first MOT falls in 2027. The 2022 cars of the same NQ5 generation pass at 90.4%, and hybrid Sportages have the best record of any version at 87.1% across all years. The seven-year warranty also means most faults on a 2024 car remain Kia's problem until 2031.

Does the Kia warranty transfer on a 2024 Sportage?

Yes. Kia's seven-year, 100,000-mile warranty transfers to subsequent owners, so a 2024 car keeps its cover until the seventh anniversary of first registration, as long as it has been serviced on schedule. Confirm the end date by VIN with a Kia dealer.

Are there any recalls on the 2024 Kia Sportage?

At the time of writing we found no DVSA recall covering a Sportage built in 2024. Recall R/2024/500 covers cars built between 8 September 2022 and 14 June 2023, so it can only apply to a 2024 registration that was built early. Recall records change, so check by registration on the GOV.UK recall checker.

Which 2024 Sportage engine is best?

It depends on how you drive. The hybrid and plug-in use a conventional six-speed automatic rather than the petrol car's seven-speed dual-clutch, and hybrids have the best MOT record of the range. The petrol manual is the simplest of all. The plug-in only makes sense if you can charge it regularly.

Is the 2024 Kia Sportage the facelift?

No. The facelifted Sportage, with new lights, a revised front end and a new dashboard layout, went on sale in the UK in mid-2025. A 2024 car is the original NQ5 that launched in 2022.
